The first edition of La Tomatina in India is officially in the books, and Shillong has the honour of becoming the first city in the country to host the same.
The recently-concluded La Tomatina festival was held in collaboration with Directorate of Horticulture, Meghalaya and Khasi Jaintia Vegetable Sellers Association, and only tomatoes that were disposed off by vendors were used during the event. After several attempts in the past to host the Spanish festival in the country, Shillong has finally succeeded in bringing the extravaganza here.
The main aim of the festival is to promote tourism in the country. Apart from all the usual tomato smashing, the debut edition had a concert which had differently-abled children from Bethany Society performing, apart from an exhibition for handicrafts and horticulture.
Though it’s just an edition old, India’s La Tomatina looks very promising, and should definitely happen next year!
